What the Crown Procedure Looks Like

Getting a crown typically takes two appointments. At the first visit, we examine the tooth, prepare it by removing any decay and reshaping it to fit the crown, and take a precise impression or digital scan. A temporary crown is placed to protect the tooth while your permanent restoration is being custom-fabricated at the dental lab.

At the second appointment, the temporary crown is removed and the permanent one is tried in for fit, color, and bite. Once everything looks and feels right, it is bonded securely in place. Our team makes any final adjustments to ensure your bite is comfortable and the crown sits perfectly against the surrounding gum tissue.

We use tooth-colored ceramic and zirconia for our crowns, which are both strong enough to handle the forces of daily chewing and natural-looking enough that most people will not be able to tell the difference. With proper care, a well-placed crown can last 15 years or longer.

What to expect after crown placement:

Some sensitivity around the tooth and gum is normal for a few days and typically resolves quickly
Avoid very hard or sticky foods for the first 24 hours after the permanent crown is placed

Brush and floss around the crown just as you would a natural tooth to keep the margins clean

Crowns are durable, but they are not indestructible. A few simple habits will help yours last as long as possible:

Brush twice a day and floss daily, paying special attention to the gumline around the crown where plaque can build up.
Avoid biting into ice, hard candy, or other very hard foods that could chip or crack the ceramic.
If you grind your teeth at night, wearing a custom night guard is one of the most important things you can do to protect your crown.
Do not use your crowned tooth to bite fingernails, open packaging, or do anything your teeth were not designed for.
